The Winds of Change

There are 3 kinds of people in the world.

The pessimist complains about the wind.
The optimist expects it to change.
The leader adjusts the sails.

William Arthur Ward
1921-1994

There is but one constant in life.  We fear it, we fight it, avoid it, deny it, despise it.  It can be uncomfortable and unsettling causing us concern if not worry. Stopping us in our tracks.  We try to ignore it, put it off and procrastinate in making a decision hoping what we have no control over will simply disappear and go away.  That one constant, that one consistency of life is change.

As I think back over all the changes in my life I’ve discovered none of these changes these course corrections have ever killed me although at the time I wondered.  Here I am!  Hindsight is 20/20 as they say but what is more important than looking back is viewing those circumstances, those challenges, those changes as building blocks of experience that reinforce our foundation, firming it up and and giving us forward motion.  Forward motion for our purpose in life whether on a business or personal level.

What once I faced with uncertainty, situations that drained my self confidence and made me question my self esteem I no longer do.  I have not only survivor but a thriver.  I no longer evade or try to hide from change but I accept it.  I embrace it!  I capture those winds of change in my sails not to chart my course, for that is my job, but to drive me ever closer to that shore where my dreams are waiting to be realized and new dreams to dream.  To paraphrase what author William Arthur Ward says regarding leadership, I no longer complain about the wind.  I no longer expect it to change.  My only job is to adjust my sails.

Come sail away with me.

  1. Greatness is not in where we stand, but in what direction we are moving. We must sail sometimes with the wind, and sometimes against it–but sail we must, and not drift, nor lie at anchor.
